MANDY ESPEZEL | January 27 | 12 - 1 PM | FREE | VIRTUAL

Mandy Espezel has an intuitive material studio practice, engaging an intersectional feminist-phenomenological discourse. They are invested in the power and necessity of vulnerability, working to confront the limits and conceptual dilemmas present within historically binary modes of representation/mimesis, while striving for corporeal embodiment. Espezel’s interdisciplinary work is rooted in the realm of painting, with recent projects exploring site specific installations which incorporate individual paintings/drawings/found materials/video/performance/textile sculptural elements. The manifestation of anxieties (realized in both psychological and physiological states), empathy, sensuality, touch, and the “autobiographical” as a source of influence in interpretation and production are current thematic concerns. Subjectivity is source material, and through intensive confrontations of these categories, cultural meaning is broken down, and new possibilities for understanding unfold.

Mandy Espezel is an artist originally from Fort McMurray, Alberta, Canada. They received a BFA in Art & Design from the University of Alberta in 2007, and a MFA in Art in 2012 from the University of Lethbridge. Espezel has received support for their work from the Canada Council for the Arts, the Alberta Foundation for Arts, and the Telus Music Video Fund. Recent projects include residencies and exhibitions in Korea and Estonia. Based in Lethbridge, Alberta, Espezel is a recurrent sessional instructor in the Art Department at the University of Lethbridge and at Lethbridge College.

This event is hosted online with zoom.
