In recognition of Indigenous Peoples Day, and in partnership with Reconciliation Lethbridge, we invite you to our special online screening of FAST HORSE, an intimate verité into the fascinating, and dangerous, high-stakes game of Indian Relay. Winner of the Short Film Special Jury Award for Directing at Sundance 2019, Director Alexandra Lazarowich will join us online for an artist talk and question period following the film.
In Blackfoot country, they call Indian Relay “North America’s original extreme sport.” Jockeys bareback gallop their horses around a track, jumping off one and on to another in a chaotic melee of horses and handlers. Filmed from the exhilarating perspective of the rider, with a heart-pumping climax for the final race at the Calgary Stampede, the film brings you to understand and respect the skills of horsemanship, which have been passed down for generations and remain intact.
Alexandra Lazarowich is a Cree filmmaker whose work has screened at the Museum of Modern Art (MoMA), the Winnipeg Art Gallery, and the Smithsonian Institution in Washington, DC and has had her films screen at festivals around the world. In her work, Lazarowich continues to try and tell the stories of Indigenous people.
The film will be screened in a group online video chat via Zoom, with an artist talk by Lazarowich to follow. Please register at rsvp@saag.ca and receive a link to the event. Share your experience on social media at: #SAAGmatrix
