Join us for Bletcher Hour!

The Gallery’s critical reading group, named after our first librarian Hazel Bletcher, gathers for open discussion once a month. Readings explore key themes of the exhibitions and current events, with the intent to deepen our understanding of the artworks and their context within our community.

The March Bletcher Hour will be held digitally via Zoom to discuss Alf Bogusky's essay "Transcending Foundations: Reflections on the Southern Alberta Art Gallery’s Years of Service."

Alf Bogusky has been credited as an innovative force throughout his long career in Canada's art community. The arc of Bogusky's career in galleries and museum includes: Director/Curator of the SAAG (1979-1985), Executive Director of The Art Gallery of Windsor (1985-1992), Executive Director of The Edmonton Art Gallery, now the Art Gallery of Alberta (1992-1996), Director of The Vancouver Art Gallery (1996-2000), and Director General of the Kitchener Waterloo Art Gallery (2001-2010). In "Transcending Foundations," Bogusky looks back on the Gallery’s early years of operations, and considers how art institutions can and have served their communities. This essay is featured in the forthcoming book Towards Real and Permanent Good: Reflections on the Centennial Anniversary of the Lethbridge Carnegie Library Building, a Tiny Press publication commemorating the 100th anniversary of Lethbridge's first purpose-built library, now home to the Southern Alberta Art Gallery.
