This Bletcher Hour we are joined by guest artist Mary Kavanagh, to discuss Jayne Wilkinson’s essay A Radioactive Domestic, which will be published as part of Kavanagh’s upcoming book to be released Fall 2020.
July 16 marks the 75th anniversary of the first detonation of an atomic bomb at the Trinity site in New Mexico. Kavanagh’s solo exhibition at the SAAG in 2019, Daughters of Uranium, explored the legacy of the atomic age from the perspective of the sentient body and intergenerational trauma. This collection of work emerged from a longstanding interest in the body as a site of memory, erasure, violence, and inscription.
Mary Kavanagh is an artist and Professor in the Department of Art, University of Lethbridge. She has exhibited her work in solo and group exhibitions across Canada and abroad, and is the recipient of numerous awards, grants, and residencies. For the past decade, she has researched and documented activities and ephemera at historic and active nuclear sites in Utah, Nevada, New Mexico, Alaska, Japan, and Canada.
The SAAG’s critical reading group resumes in-person gatherings for the summer months. Readings will explore key themes of the exhibitions and connect with current events.
