Join us Thursday, July 13 from 6 to 7 p.m. for Bletcher Hour, the Gallery’s monthly critical reading group. Readings explore key themes of the exhibitions and current events, with the intent to deepen our understanding of the artworks and their context within our community.
We will gather together to discuss Laura Demers’ "Cut from the Same Cloth” and the introduction of Robyn Maynard's Policing Black Lives: State Violence in Canada from Slavery to the Present.
Laura Demers is an artist, writer, and independent curator based in Toronto. She was the original curator of Cut by the same cloth at The Power Plant contemporary art gallery, where she was the TD Curator of Education and Outreach Fellow (2019-2021). In “Cut from the same cloth” Demers provides a look into Nathan Eugene Carson’s first solo exhibition of the same name, exploring the interrelated series of figurative works that make up the show. In the essay, Demers frequently references our other reading for the month: Robyn Maynard’s Policing Black Lives, an in-depth analysis of anti-black racism and state violence in Canada. Carson also recommended Policing Black Lives for the Gallery’s Art Library.
Please note that both texts address anti-black racism, state violence against Black people in Canada and abroad. This subject matter may be upsetting to some readers. If you have any concerns ahead of reading the texts, please contact Heather Kehoe, Program & Event Coordinator, to receive additional content warnings.
This program is free to attend. Please contact Heather Kehoe, Program & Event Coordinator, to register. Readings are sent as PDFs in advance of the event. If you cannot make it in person, online attendance options are available.
