The Articulations Art Lecture Series offers presentations from contemporary practicing artists and arts professionals. Local and international artists, curators, critics, art historians, theorists, filmmakers, and more, join us in discussion online, sharing their practice and engaging with the audience in open, critical discussion.

The Southern Alberta Art Gallery Maansiksikaitsitapiitsinikssin is pleased to host a talk and tour with exhibiting artist Mandy Espezel.

Mandy Espezel is a Canadian interdisciplinary artist originally from the Regional Municipality of Wood Buffalo, located within Treaty 8 territory on the traditional lands of the Cree, Dene, and the unceded territory of the Métis. They received a BFA from the University of Alberta in 2007, and an MFA from the University of Lethbridge in 2012. Espezel has participated in numerous exhibitions and residencies within Canada and internationally, and has received support for their work from the Alberta Foundation for the Arts and the Canada Council for the Arts. Espezel is an Instructor in the Art Department at the University of Lethbridge, and is based in Lethbridge on Treaty 7 land, in the traditional territories of the Blackfoot Confederacy.

Body Longing is a painted installation considering how our bodies create and experience paintings. Espezel carefully considered how the quirks of the century-old gallery space would impact and be changed by the easel paintings entering the space, creating one large artwork across the entire room. Body Longing encourages us to walk, crouch, and peer, rewarding visual exploration and making us aware of how bodies and vision are connected.

This exhibition was made possible with funding assistance from the Canada Council for the Arts, Alberta Foundation for the Arts, and the City of Lethbridge.

NOTE: Visitors to the Gallery must wear a mask, and everyone aged 12 and over must provide proof of vaccination, proof of exemption, or proof of a negative PCR test within 72 hours of in-person attendance.

There is limited in-person capacity for this event. Socially-distanced overflow seating will be available in the lower Gallery with access to watch the presentation through Instagram Live.
