MORGAN MALENKA | FEBRUARY 26 | 12 - 1 PM MST | FREE

Morgan Melenka is a visual artist from amiskwacîwâskahikan / Edmonton who has recently relocated to Mohkinstsis /Calgary. Through sculpture and printmaking, she engages with prefab architecture to discuss the ways we treat public space and how artifice functions in our built world. She has exhibited across Canada and in the U.S, including New York, Nebraska, and Tennessee. She is a graduate from NSCAD University’s MFA program and in May 2019 she was the artist-in-residence at the Vorres Museum in Paiania, Greece. In 2020 she taught printmaking at NSCAD University and the University of Alberta.

Melenka’s talk, There are no walls, only partitions, shimmering membranes covered in mirror or gold, will offer an outline of their recent work 2017 - 2021. This will also include looking to artists and writers who have influenced their thinking of architecture and space.

The SAAG is proud to be a partner of the University of Lethbridge’s Art NOW and Architecture & Design NOW lecture series, now streaming online over zoom. Encompassing presentations by artists, curators, critics, art historians, theorists, filmmakers, and more, these speaker series are of the largest and longest running programs in the country, having hosted more than 700 presenters over more than three decades. The SAAG contributes to the diverse spectrum of presenters by recommending our roster of contemporary practicing artists and curators as guests.

Supported by the Canada Council and the Alberta Foundation for the Arts, the course offers presentations from a wide array of arts professionals. Representing a wide range of contemporary practices, up to three different speakers each week discuss their ideas, working methods, and interests in the visual arts. With about 30 speakers per semester, Art NOW is an amazing resource for anyone interested in contemporary art. Best of all, the lectures are open to the public - everyone is welcome!

These events are hosted online over zoom, registration is through the University of Lethbridge.

We acknowledge the support of the Canada Council for the Arts. Nous remercions le Conseil des arts du Canada de son soutien.
