HEAVEN ON EARTH | DAVID KRAMER
Kramer’s practice combines sculpture, video, performance, painting and the written word while neatly avoiding any traditional categorizations. Kramer’s two-dimensional works include roughly constructed collages of slick magazine pages, personal photographs and drawings typewritten, often amusing narratives – confessional memories and unconscious ramblings. His sculptures are both eclectic collection of found objects, such as discarded liquor bottles surrounding garish neon lights, and handcrafted works such as comfortably overstuffed furniture which viewers are invited to sit on. The artist has also become known for his large “text sculptures,” letter shaped lightboxes which boldly spell out words like L-o-v-e and C-h-a-n-c-e. The letter’s varied sizes, colours, and typography give them appearance of discarded business and commercial signage. For his SAAG installation Kramer constructed a large fluorescent-lit sign reading “HEAVENLY” which floated on the ceiling above his exhibition space and produced a new video-work in his Travelodge motel room.
