35TH ANNUAL ART’S ALIVE AND WELL IN THE SCHOOLS

Presented by Pratt & Whitney Canada Inc

For 35 years the Southern Alberta Art Gallery, in partnership with Lethbridge schools, has fostered the work of young artists through our annual Art’s Alive and Well in the Schools exhibition. As one of SAAG’s longest running programs, we’d like to celebrate this milestone with you.  Join us on May 6 for a full day of art appreciation, family-friendly activities, an “I (heart) SAAG” photo booth and more!

The Southern Alberta Art Gallery is committed to the learning and growth of our visitors and community, and Art’s Alive is one way we honor that commitment. Jane Huson, art teacher at Winston Churchill High School notes “Art’s Alive is vital because it provides an arena for our community, parents, teachers and the artists to come together to share their work outside of the classroom.” For many youth, making art is a solitary pursuit and to have a professional and public venue to showcase their talent is a rare treat that offers a glimpse of the possibilities that lay ahead.

Caresse Nadeau, Art’s Alive alumni shared her story with us:

I participated in Arts Alive in 2009 when I was in grade eleven. My piece was an assemblage robot made of old computer parts that was wearing glasses and reading a book. It was really cool for me to have something in the art gallery that I could show my friends and family ... I felt like a “real” artist. Currently I’m designing and selling hats, training in circus arts, and of course, I’m still making art!

Over this 35-year-long partnership with Lethbridge Schools, almost 15,000 students have exhibited their artwork at SAAG. What a fantastic way to be a part of community life and to celebrate creativity from generation to generation! If you participated in Art’s Alive, we want to hear from you! Share your story with us by emailing info@saag.ca, and on May 6, 2012 join us for the Art’s Alive 35th Anniversary Celebration presented by Pratt & Whitney Canada Inc.
