SOBEY ART AWARD

The Southern Alberta Art Gallery is excited to participate in the 2012 Sobey Art Awards. “Our mission at SAAG is to foster the work of contemporary artists who challenge the boundaries of their disciplines, and the Sobey Art Award shares that goal” says Ryan Doherty, Curator at the Southern Alberta Art Gallery.

2012 marks the 10th Anniversary of the Sobey Art Award and SAAG Curator Ryan Doherty has been invited to participate in this important milestone. Like the other curators who will form the panel this year, Doherty is returning for his second posting as representative of the Prairies and the North in this nation-wide competition. The Sobey Art Award is Canada’s largest prize for a young Canadian artist. It is awarded annually to an artist 40 years or younger who has shown their work in a public or commercial art gallery in Canada within 18 months of being nominated. The winner of the award receives $50,000 and each of the runners up will receive $5,000.

The panel of curators consisting of a representative from a noted gallery in each of five regions (The Atlantic provinces, Quebec, Ontario, The Prairies and the North, and the West Coast and Yukon) develops the shortlist for the Sobey Art Award. The curatorial panel creates a regional list of five artists from each region; these are selected from the list of nominated artists, and based on their professional knowledge of their regions and of the national arts scene. The curatorial panel then meets and chooses one representative from each region, from the long list of twenty-five, to be included on the national shortlist. The panel will choose the winner in the fall of 2012.

The Art Gallery of Nova Scotia administers the award and will accept nominations for the 2012 Sobey Art Award, for each of the five regions from recognized agents and institutions. Deadline for nominations is March 1, 2012.
